Books I befriended

Like anybody else who reads a lot, there were a few books that made an impact - some inspired, some inspired envy, some moved me, some hardened and some softened me.

  • Peter Høeg: Fortællinger om natten / Tales of the night
This small collection of short stories has an elegance, a graceful lightness to it. The stories are told strongly, dipping into recent Danish history and society, but are mostly stories of what people do with - and to - people. All the stories take place on March 19, 1929, but Høeg takes the reader many places in his blend of psychology, satire, irony, harsh truths, deep emotions and sexuality.
While the English translation can not convey how deeply Peter Høeg is tuned into the language, it is quite good and does the storytelling justice.
